To sign up for one or more classes, print out the registration form found at link below and mail to the address on the form with a $10 reservation fee per non-free class. No walk-ins will be allowed for craft classes, please register in advance so the teachers can plan accordingly.

Fruit Tree Care  -  $10.00

Learn how to keep your fruit trees and berry crops healthy, productive  and disease free. We will cover bareroot planting, pest control, application of dormant controls, timing of fertilization and thinning for fruit production. Class will take place in an Orchard setting.

 

Ukrainian Easter Eggs - $35.00

Pysanky is the art of decorating eggs with beeswax and multiple layers of rich colored dyes. Simple to elaborate designs produce beautiful results with the guiding  help of a practiced artist. Bring two blown-out white eggs.  Kids of all ages are encouraged to attend. Class limit 8.

Vegetable gardening in our foothills can be challenging, from inadequate soil to pesky gophers. Learn the basic techniques for growing an organic garden.  We will have a two hour discussion followed by a workshop.  Bring a sack lunch for day class.

Learn the basics of planting by the moon, advanced compost making and the BD compost preparations as taught in the Rudolf Steiner lectures.  We will look at new ways to preserve and restore soil health and ensure quality produce that will last after picking.

Pine Needle Basketry - $45.00

Pine needle baskets are not woven.  They start with one knotted needle and unfold into a spiral that coils until the basket is complete.  If you have determination and strong hands you will be rewarded with a unique basket.  Bring a thimble, scissors and tapestry needle.  Class  limit 10.

Learn to make ancient looking planting containers with moss growing on them! Any size is possible, huge to  small. Demonstration, hands on experience,  handouts. Wear ‘messy’ clothes.

 

Gourd Craft - $45.00

Learn to cut, clean and do art work with gourds. Various styles and design ideas will be demonstrated.  Participants will complete a gourd art project from start to finish. Learn about growing and drying your own gourds. Bring a sack lunch,wear work clothes.

Come and join Cat, “the bird lady” for a morning of Raptors. She will have her two falconry birds, a great horned owl and peregrine falcon. Learn about these and others that live in our area. There will be bone clones to see and pellets to dissect.

 

High Elevation Gardening - Free

Saturday, May 17th & 18th, 10am & 2pm

Gardening in the higher elevations is unique. When everyone else is planting their tomatoes, snow may still be on the ground.  This class will teach you when to plant and what plants are appropriate for the higher elevations; vegetables, shrubs and trees will be discussed. No need to register. Bring your kids and send them to the seed ball class below.

Kid’s gardening based around clay seed balls. Kids will choose and make their own seed balls to plant in their gardens at home. Think mud pies packed with special ingredients! Wear play/work clothes. Do not need to register.

 

Grand Bluff Forest Tour - $10.00

Hike and tour this watershed and forest restoration project.  This  will be a mildly strenuous hike for 3-4 hours.  Some wildflowers will be blooming.  Bring a sack lunch and water.  Wear hiking boots and long pants.  Meet at the Dinkey Creek Rd. Park N Ride at 9am.

 

Bats 101 - $10.00

Saturday, July 12th, 7pm - 9pm

Burleigh Lockwood, Field Biologist

Learn the basic ecology of bats and why bats are important to us. Join the bat lady, who has  studied bats for 30 years. She will tell you their habits and take you for a bat viewing of our  native species around the nursery. Bring a small flashlight to find your way, but not to scare the bats away.

August is the time to start preparing one of the most productive gardens of the year. Learn how to start lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and other greens to have them ready for Thanksgiving. Fertilizer timing and winter protection will be covered.

 

Introduction to Natural &

Botanical Perfumery ~ $45.00

This class will outline the rudiments of beginning perfumery focusing on top, middle and base note building techniques and how to pre-plan a perfume.  Students will learn the basic techniques to build their own custom perfume to take home. Class limit 6.

 

Composting Class - $10.00

Discover how simple it is to make your own high quality compost to amend your garden soil.  Learn which organic materials are best to use and which ones to avoid.  We will be discussing a variety of composting methods and building a pile.  Wear work clothes. Bring gloves and a pitchfork, if you can.

Renowned Yosemite basketmaker, Julia Parker, says ‘Teaching students to weave baskets is not only sharing a sacred skill, but also connecting them in a magical way to history & the environment. Basket weavers also learn great respect for the materials they use, for it is the fiber & not the weaver who makes beautiful baskets.’ Make a basket with Julia to take home with you. Propagation of CA Native Plants -$15.00

Learn about the various propagation techniques for California Native plants. Ray will discuss collecting, storing, stratifying and germinating seed.  Taking and rooting cuttings successfully and proper growing conditions for the plants will also be covered.  Handouts and information about books and supplies available.  A tour of the Nursery’s growing facilities is included.
