Heart Food: Judee Sill’s Hymn to the Infinite
Released in 1973, Judee Sill’s Heart Food is one of the rare albums that never had its moment, and yet refuses to fade. It arrived at the height of the Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter era, when Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne were rewriting the rules of American folk-rock. But Sill was working from an entirely different cosmology. Her music wasn’t confessional or conversational; it was devotional. Drawing equally from Bach and Appalachian gospel, cowboy ballads and church hymns, Heart Food is a record that sounds like it’s trying to reach heaven by building a ladder out of melody itself.
Sill was a self-taught composer and orchestrator with a life as turbulent as it was brief. She wrote, arranged, and produced much of Heart Food herself. She does not separate the sacred from the secular, wrestling with longing, salvation, and desire as part of the same divine pursuit.
For decades, Heart Food was a cult artifact passed hand-to-hand among musicians and collectors. But in recent years, as new audiences discover Sill’s work, it has begun to take its rightful place as one of the most daring and spiritually charged albums of the 1970s.
Join us for a full-album listening session on vinyl, followed by an open conversation about Sill’s legacy, the album’s intricate craftsmanship, and the way her music continues to resonate with anyone searching for meaning beyond the surface of things.
